Behind the Masc: Defining Masculinity with Carlos Andres Gomez
An intimate evening with spoken word artist Carlos Andrés Gómez as he comes to Ryerson for a special intimate performance that looks at what it means to be a ‘good man’ in a world where ‘masculinity’ is confined by the narrowest of definitions. It will also be an exploration of the powerful and beautiful things that can define manhood "...giving men the permission to be the best versions of what they can be".
Starting the main show with a powerful spoken word piece will be V Tran from V-Day at Ryerson and Come Unity and Neree Smith from Urban Hip Hop Union
Special Guest Boonaa Mohammed will open for Carlos!

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes on: Thursday, October 1st, 2009 12-2pm @ Nathan Philips Square, Toronto
Ready to take up the high heel challenge?
Stiletto or pump, flat or sling back, patent leather or leopard print, or even flip flops you decide. All that matters is that you come with your game face on, ready to strut your stuff for the women in your life. In fact, bring them along with you, side by side, in support of a future without violence.Thousands of men will take over the city's business core this Fall to raise awareness and funds in an effort to end violence against women. This first Toronto edition of the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes¨ fundraising event asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes. It's not easy, but it gets the community talking about something that's really difficult to talk about gender relations and sexual violence.
If you are interested in getting volunteering, participating or learning more information, please visit walkamiletoronto.org. Official online registration NOW OPEN!.

The Clothesline Project
SHARE, LEARN & SPREAD THE WORD WITH STORIES TO BREAK THE SILENCE!
This is a chance for those of you who have witnessed or experienced violence or who want to speak up about it to write or draw your stories on t-shirts, which will be hung on a clothesline for the public to view and read. Come out, meet new people and create a shirt to help end violence against women and girls.
WHEN: FRIDAY MAY 1ST - 4th 2009
To be held outside in the Ryerson Quad from 12pm - 5pm
***1 day (Friday May 1st) of The Clothesline Project will be dedicated to workshops and writing our stories on them. This will be done as a collective group at Ryerson University. If you wish to create your shirt at home or want to remain anonymous just send us an email and we'll tell you how you can get your shirt to us.
Each T-Shirt stands for something different:
(we are urging any donations of used shirts that we could use for this project)
White: Represents women who died because of violence.
Yellow: represents battered or assaulted women.
Red: are for survivors of rape and sexual assault.
Blue: represent survivors of incest and sexual abuse.
Purple: represents women attacked because of their sexual orientation.
Black/grey: is for women attacked for political reasons.
